He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1948 and received his B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University where he studied with Douglas Wilson and Edward S. While in Pittsburgh, he also painted with David Summers and Michael Peglau and was a member of The Berg Academy. Kwiatek shared a studio with Amy Purcell and Leonard Bullockin Cologne between 1985 -1987.
